Although working as a divemaster/instructor in a palm fringed dive resort is a great experience, there is no money in it. It is recommended, but only for a short time.
There is however a good living to be made in being a highly skilled manager and an even better life to be had in owning your own dive operation.

It is not uncommon for fully qualified instructors to join our career courses as they realise that they do not have the skills to make a decent living in diving.
Skills, experience and knowledge are gained over time and are not necessarily the best quality. It is far better to be taught “best practice” right from the start.

THE DIVING PROFESSIONAL NEEDS TO BE PROFICIENT IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS

The aim of the Pro Course/Internship Program is to give the diver the tools to succeed in the industry.
The course will provide the knowledge and some of the experience. The rest has to be earned over time, but given the correct start the success rate is impressive. A high number of graduates from our courses in the past are now at the top of the industry.
The career staff at Divetek are not just teaching book knowledge but have years of actual hands on experience in running successful resorts and dive shops.

If you are serious about a career in the Scuba industry then an internship is essential.

WHY THE DIVETEK INTERNSHIP/PRO COURSE PROGRAMME?

Divetek has a wealth of actual experience and know what is needed.

The course does not just provide theory but actual hands on experience.

We have had huge success with post course job placements.

The cost in both money and time is low compared to training in other careers.

The cost of each course taken individually would be much higher.

You actually spend a large amount of your time in training.

Many other courses you are simply used as cheep labour and very little training takes place.

Warning: The course is very intense and takes a large degree of dedication and effort. Hours can be long and many evening and weekends will be taken up.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE INTERNSHIP AND THE PRO COURSE PROGRAMME?

The Pro course candidates pay the full price and attend the course from January till May. Upon completion of the Pro Course we will assist where possible to place them at positions within the industry, but not necessarily within Divetek.

The internship must be applied for and we will only take two candidates.
These candidates will do the same Pro course but pay will considerably less.
In return, they work for Divetek from June till the end of the year.
This gives them work experience and a very good possibility of being employed full time by Divetek at the end of the 6 month work obligation.

Applications for the Pro Course will be considered for the internship programme.

COURSE COSTS:

DIVETEK PRO COURSE: R69000 (R13800 PER MONTH)

DIVETEK INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME: R22000 (R4400 PER MONTH)

The above prices exclude the enrolment fee of R6500.
A 5% discount will apply for an upfront payment on the Pro Course, no additional discount for the Internship Programme. Interns will not earn salaries for the duration of their 6 month work obligation.

You are not locked into a 5 month obligation. If you feel you are not getting good value for money from the course you can simply leave at any time and you will not be liable for any further payment.

The only training exclusion is the NAUI Instructor manuals and registration that is paid to NAUI directly.

Included:

  • The costs of all the courses

STYLE OF THE COURSE

The course is run in a relaxed but disciplined manner.
Training is done morning and afternoon 5 days a week and includes several weekends and evenings.
The candidates will be given a log book with with all the lectures, dives, repairs and exams listed. Each task or skill needs to be signed off before final qualification.
Some of these tasks or skills may require the candidates to come in on the “free days” in order to complete them.

For example:
There will be 20 nitrox blending fills that have to be completed and signed off.
Candidates will also need to attend 2 full open water courses as an assistant with a current Divetek Open Water Instructor before they will be ready to teach their own students.

OBLIGATIONS OF THE CANDIDATES

Full attendance is crucial, although illness and emergencies do occur and we can work around these. No-shows and attendance issues hamper the course and affect the others.

As we are teaching the candidates to be professional we expect professional behaviour.
Politeness and punctuality are a must.
Coming to class hungover is not acceptable
Drugs are completely unacceptable and will result in immediate dismissal.

The candidates must prepare for exams and do the assignments. Graduation is not guaranteed and the candidates must meet the standard in order to be certified.

Extra help on topics that the candidates struggle with can be provided.

LEAVING THE COURSE

In the event the course does not reach your expectations you may leave the course at any time.

In addition if we are not happy with your abilities, attitude and progress we may ask you to leave the course. Of course you are not liable for the payment of rest of the program you do not attend. However payment in full for the current month is required.
In the event of dismissal from the course the full month must still be paid.

Exams must be passed in order to continue and you will have two chances to succeed before being asked to leave.
This program is NOT a party filled “gap year”  and requires serious dedication and effort.
We can not have candidates that fall behind or disrupt the other candidates.

QUALIFICATON, CERTIFICATION AND TRAINING ASSOCIATION

Divetek has chosen the American organisation NAUI for the program as the level is much higher than other agencies. It is essential for a dive professional to have  the higher level of skills and knowledge. Cross over to other agencies after being a NAUI instructor is a doddle.

The candidate will complete the course having completed the highest level of instructor training.
The certification is Divetek and at the end of the course you will be a Divetek Instructor as well as a NAUI instructor. Divetek is a full NAUI affiliate.
